‘Character and manners are among the most important spheres in a person’s upbringing. This is especially true in this era, in which the world is undergoing a crisis regarding character. Materialism and technology are its ultimate values and hearts do not value good character.
The dominance of the West and the weakness of the Ummah have led to an inferiority complex and prevalence of Western values, coupled with contempt for the character and etiquette of Sharīʿah…’
So does the esteemed author, Dr Duwīsh, begin his valuable work in which he appeals from his heart to the Muslims to remember the increasingly neglected facet of Islām – our character.
He covers both the importance of good character in general and then sheds light on the specifics relevant to our times, such as humility, tact, patience, leniency, etc. These traits are relevant to all Muslims, but the author also specifically appeals to those involved in Islāmic fields – whether teaching, preaching or online propagation – to be alert to the snares of Satan and not confuse personal misapplication of a seemingly good trait as being a service unto the faith.
Although this book is a heartfelt appeal (perhaps reflected in the style reminiscent of a talk with beloved students) it is not an emotional reflection. Rather, it draws on authentic sources of Islām – the Qurʾān, Ḥadīth and commentaries of the scholars to expound the character traits we should imbue – those of the Prophets , and foremost those of their Chief .
May Allāh swt reward the author and all those involved in this English rendition, and may it benefit the respected reader.
